Nancy Salzman, former president of Executive Success Programs (ESP)—a company offering personal and professional development programs designed to help people discover, develop, and utilize more of their untapped potential—joins Kate for the first of a two-part conversation. In 1998, she and Keith Raniere co-founded ESP, which Raniere later expanded into the broader umbrella organization NXIVM. He presented NXIVM as an elite self-improvement and leadership training company, but it ultimately became a vehicle for manipulation, coercive control, and the secretive subgroup DOS that led to his federal conviction. Nancy was sentenced in 2021 to 42 months in federal prison for racketeering-related charges connected to her role in the organization.
In this first part, she discusses how she met Raniere, the creation and rapid growth of ESP, and what was really happening behind the scenes as the organization evolved.

| 0:20.5 | manipulation, coercion, and abuse. |
| 0:23.5 | A few weeks ago, I reached out to Nancy Salzman's attorney. Nancy, the former president of |
| 0:29.3 | executive success programs and co-founder of what would become Nexium, served 42 months in federal |
| 0:35.5 | prison for racketeering related charges connected to her role in the organization. |
| 0:40.6 | I was told she wasn't interested in interviews, and that seemed final. |
| 0:45.5 | But on November 3rd, the morning episode 1447 aired, my interview with Natalie Robamed, host of CBC's Uncovered series, Alison, after Nexium, I received |

| 1:03.1 | open to speaking about her experience. We spoke on the phone, and within minutes, I understood |
| 1:08.4 | how important her perspective would be for anyone trying to make sense of this story. |
| 1:14.2 | I started following Nexium in 2018 in the haze of late-night newborn feedings, scrolling through articles, documents, survivor accounts, |
| 1:24.0 | trying to understand how a group marketed as elite personal development could transform into a high-control organization that left so many lives fractured. |
| 1:33.6 | Over the years, I've interviewed former members, some of whom I've come to know quite well. |
| 1:39.0 | And what I've learned is this. |
| 1:40.9 | The people who took part in ESP and Nexium were overwhelmingly well-meaning individuals |
| 1:46.5 | searching for growth, clarity, or community during a vulnerable moment in their lives. |
| 1:53.2 | Keith Ranieri exploited those desires with subtle escalating manipulation. |
| 1:58.2 | Most didn't realize they had entered a high control group until they were deeply |
| 2:01.8 | immersed. Some woke up years ago, others only recently, and recovery is not linear. There is no |
| 2:09.3 | universal timeline, only a long process of reclaiming identity, rebuilding trust, and integrating |
