Summary

Tucker Carlson, who's been great on some issues, has been speaking out against what he considers the free-market fundamentalism (I wish!) of mainstream conservatism. He says we need to understand that there's more to life than GDP, etc. Since this line of argument makes me crazy, I devoted this episode to answering it.

the idea that there are people out there who just fetishize the free market. And we need to

recognize that there are other values in life other than economic efficiency. And we need to have

1:09.4

an economy that's more in line with what families need and

so on and so forth. So for its supporters, it's being portrayed as this fresh new thinking. But as somebody

1:19.5

who has criticized this line of thought for a while, I can tell you it's been around for a long,

1:24.3

long time. It goes back, I would say it goes back to G.K. Chesterton.

1:30.0

It's that kind of thinking. And given that I'm somebody who very much, you know, I love children

1:36.2

and I want to encourage families to have a lot of children, I'm not the sort of guy, I guess you

1:42.4

would think, would be opposed to, you know, family-friendly economy, whatever this project is.

1:48.9

But it's one of those things that the name of it makes it sound benign.
