there. Today we'll be telling the story of St. Faustina

Kowalska, whose face is celebrated on October 5th. Faustina, whose birth name was

Helena, was born on August 25th, 1905, in Glogovietz, Poland. Her family was

poor and her father worked as a carpenter. Faustina wanted to become a nun from

the time she was seven years old, but when she grew up her parents would not

give her permission to join the convent. So instead at age 16 she went to work as

a housekeeper and helped support her family with the money she earned. Then in

1924 when she was 19 years old she had a vision of Jesus. He told her to go to

Warsaw and enter the convent. This time Faustina did not ask for her parents

permission, but instead left for Warsaw without knowing what would happen when

she got there. Just because it was what Jesus told her to do doesn't mean it

was easy. In fact she was turned away by several

convents, some of which even said they wouldn't accept a poor maid. Finally she

found a convent that agreed to let her in if she could pay her way. So she

continued working as a housemaid in Warsaw until she could save enough money to
