Hello, friends, and welcome back to the Bikes for Death podcast. As always, my name is Patrick,

0:04.7

and I'm your host. And today on the podcast are Kuyah and Dennis. They are two road cyclists

0:12.2

based out of Austin, Texas. They race for the Night Owl Racing Team. And Kuyah was our first place finisher at this year's East Texas Showdown,

0:24.0

which is 380 miles. He said a fastest known time, or FKT, of 23 hours and 56 minutes, coming right

0:35.2

under 24 hours. And Dennis was the second person to cross the finish line

0:42.6

but he did not officially place due to being disqualified earlier in his race and there's a couple

0:52.2

interesting things going on with this particular storyline and why I wanted to bring these guys on the podcast.

0:58.2

I mean, first of all, they came into bike pack racing with pretty much very little to know knowledge about what bike pack racing was and the ethics and ethos and the spirit of the race and

1:11.6

Dennis and I had an encounter. He actually borrowed my seat post and thereby became

1:19.6

disqualified, but that raised some questions and we will get into all those questions and

1:25.9

answer those in today's episode. So yeah, I mean,

1:29.5

so the storylines here are we got a couple guys from much different backgrounds coming in as

1:35.7

road cyclists doing something very differently and doing it very, very well. These guys are

1:42.2

supremely fast and they were both pushing themselves past

1:47.0

anything they had ever done before. They were in unknown territory. It's a fascinating

1:51.9

story. I'm so glad that they made the choice to sign up for the showdown. Them coming was not

1:58.8

only inspirational watch, but it was illuminating to me as a new race director on ways that I can improve and make sure that the rules and the spirit of the race and all these things are conveyed better to all people that are coming into bikepacking.

2:17.2

And as we grow as a community, we're going to have new people coming all the time,

2:21.8

which is great.

2:23.1

So yeah, this was a great learning opportunity.

2:26.1

Most of all, I just really enjoyed these guys a lot.

2:29.6

They have a great energy about them.
