There is an event in Macalester, Oklahoma, which is to my knowledge, the only one of the country

where the VIP section is next to the felon seating, and that's the McAllister Prison

Rodeo.

Before I move forward, let me clarify.

The McAllister Prison Rodeo really exists,

and I have been to it as a spectator.

So this isn't a flight of fancy about how funny it would be if there were prison rodeos.

McAllister has one.

And it's like Shawshank Redemption meets He-Haw.

And I have to say, I kind of respect those felonious bull riders for jumping into the ring, because it's not like they get to practice a lot.

Even in Oklahoma we don't have bulls wandering around the prison yard.

Maybe chickens, but definitely not bulls.

So some of these guys are having to learn how to bull ride by reading pamphlets or

sitting backwards on a toilet and really firing up the old imagination.

Which is impressive because bulls absolutely want to murder you.

Once you get flung off the back of a bowl, all 800 pounds of it want to snuff out your face like a cigarette.

There are fellow rodeo teams, I think from other penitentiaries as well, sort of like a field trip,

and there's also a professional team that competes, and presumably make sure they don't accidentally

wear any orange and wind up going home in the wrong bus. The finale is called Money the Hard Way. Somebody

puts a hundred dollar bill in a little plastic bag and suspends it between a

bowl's horns.
