Summary

‘The mind free of desire is a greater pleasure”   An enlightening discourse on the often confounding subject of renunciation, and the ways in which we might find value in this practice. Joseph draws on initial inquiries from the Buddha in determining the drawbacks of pleasure seeking-behavior in relation to the potential benefits of what he calls the ‘non-addictive’ state. Understanding the roots of our thoughts and desire systems is the first step in bringing greater awareness to our actions and the karma that unfolds therein     See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Just start with a little personal history which many of you know. When I first went to India to find the teacher, this was almost 50 years ago in 1967,

I traveled around for quite a while going to different ashrams and just looking for some

at the Burmese v. Hara, this place

where most of the Westerners were staying.

1:42.3

And at my very first meeting with him, he said something which was so down to earth and so connecting and so practical that I knew I had really found

1:59.5

what I was looking for. He said, if you want to understand your mind, sit down and observe it. So that

was it.

2:12.5

There was nothing to join.

2:13.9

There were no big rituals or ceremonies.

2:18.6

If you want to understand your mind, sit down and observe it. How else can we understand our minds except by

2:26.5

doing that? Of course this very simple instruction turned out to be very far-reaching and very profound.

2:40.0

Now as Meninjici would often say, it's very simple, but not always easy.

2:46.7

And I'm sure you can relate to that.

2:50.9

So we can begin this exploration of our minds with one aspect of our experience that's very

2:59.0

predominant for almost all of us, all of us.
