Faith is a believing in something that you most likely can't see but you believe to be true.

Yeah, it's hard to ignore the irony in that statement now. This is Mantai Teo, linebacker for Notre Dame and

a Mormon. This clip came from an ESPN video published October 2012. A Heisman Trophy candidate, Teo had gained national recognition not only for his outstanding play on the field, but for a particularly tragic event that happened just a few weeks earlier.

That faith was tested to its core on September 12th.

The tale was awakened by an early morning phone call from his parents.

They told him his grandmother, and that Santiago, had died after an extended illness.

And then, just six hours later, one heartbreaking loss was followed by another.

The older brother called me and he was just crying and crying and crying and that's when I

I kind of knew but I was still in denial and I was like

don't tell me you're crying because it's what I'm thinking and that's when he

just said she's gone.

Teo's girlfriend, René Kekua, who was battling leukemia, had died.

Except there was no Lene Kekua.

There was no leukemia, and there was no tragic death. It was all a hoax. Not one that

Mantai was playing on the world as some have speculated, but one that was played on

Mantai himself. He didn't even know. How could something like this happen?

He was completely convinced, completely invested in a complete lie. For him, it was reality.

I just lost everything.

And I cried, I yelled.

I never felt that way before.

This is six hours ago I just found like grandma passed away and you take, you know,

the love of my life.
