Summary

This morning, I had an article I wrote for Outside Magazine go live about challenging the health and fitness industry to redefine what strength looks like. But instead of feeling excited at the opportunity to share my story, I just felt disappointed because I don't think that I'll ever actually see the change that I want to see in the industry. All my life the health and fitness world has shown me what they think strength looks like and it's never looked like me. Today, I call bullshit. But I need your help to show the world that we're not motivated to acquire a body we don't have. We're motivated to pursue the strongest versions of ourselves.

Strength doesn't look a certain way, it feels a certain way.

Welcome to episode 10 of the Run Selfie Repeat podcast where we talk about life with the side of running because sometimes life is just so incredibly frustrating and aggravating that you have to spend your time running to make everything feel okay. Who can tell that I'm a little

0:24.8

on edge? Can you tell that I'm a little on edge? Because I'm on edge. So today I want to talk

0:29.3

about something that really lights a fire under my, well, you know where that was going. And it's this

0:35.7

idea that the health and fitness industry

0:39.1

has been serving up for years and years and years and years. And it's not just the health and

0:44.3

fitness industry. It's, it's everywhere. It's the media in general. It's like, it's that

0:50.5

strength looks a certain way. It's this idea that we all should be striving for the exact same body shape

1:02.0

because it's only if we acquire rippling muscles and very little body fat.

1:10.0

And if we look like Victoria's secret models that

1:12.5

you know then will be beautiful or acceptable or desirable or sexy or strong which I think strong is

1:21.6

the word that I find most important right now because you know all my life, the media has shown me what strength looked like

1:29.7

and it never looked like me. And this morning I had an article that I wrote for Outside Magazine

1:34.3

go live online. And for some reason, instead of feeling like just really excited and grateful that

1:40.8

awesome publications like Outside Magazine or Women's Running Magazine or even my

1:46.2

incredible sponsor, Wazelle, is helping me redefine what strength looks like. They're all,

1:50.7

I mean, they're all helping me get this message out. What really frustrated to me is knowing

1:57.1

that will probably never actually be the change that I personally want to see in the

2:01.3

industry and in the world. And it just, it struck a chord with me and it put me in such a shitty mood

2:07.2

today. I don't know why. Probably because it's my rest day and I couldn't go for a run.

2:13.3

But this really does just frustrate me to no end because I just, I think back to when I was
