Summary

All hail Friday afternoon, the best time of the entire week. This week's topics of discussion on Monocycle range from the stuff you tell yourself when you look into the mirror, letting yourself feel like shit and knowing when to pull yourself out of the vicious cycle. When you're down, give yourself the time you need and then pick yourself right back up. Oh, and call your mom and tell her you love her. If you're familiar with man-repeller, you definitely know that a lot of my principles on fashion

0:05.8

is that clothes have this really special transformative quality about them that can actually

make you feel like a better or conversely worse version of yourself.

0:15.0

And I know that I've been saying this since essentially I started man-repeller.

0:18.4

One of the reasons I started it is because I felt like the psychological conversation about clothes was a completely underserved market, but a very important conversation to be having publicly.

And in the last 10 or so days, I have learned firsthand in a capacity that I have never, ever learned before how important feeling good is.

0:48.2

So let's start with what I'm going to call a really common experience, right? So imagine that you have an event

0:57.7

tonight and all the people who you really care about are going to be there. And you want to

1:02.8

look great because you don't feel so great. And so you feel like you want to fake it, which a lot of

1:07.9

times truly works for me. So you're on Pinterest and you're thinking of what you want to wear and you have all these pictures of girls who you've rendered style icons for yourself up on your pinboard.

1:20.1

And you're like, oh, I've got silk pants like that.

1:22.1

I could make that work.

1:23.1

And I've got a sequin top that looks kind of similar to that.

1:25.8

And I think it would look really cool if I put a shirt underneath it.

1:28.6

And then I also have this really cool kimono that I could probably put over it, and I think this is going to be great, and I'm so excited.

1:34.1

And so you take all these materials that you've gathered, and you run and then you go and stand in front of the mirror and it just falls flat.

1:45.7

It doesn't work the way you wanted it to.

1:47.7

It's not right.

1:48.6

You spent all this time creating this thing to put on yourself, and it doesn't work.

1:53.8

So you go back to your closet and you're a little bit jumbled.

1:56.6

You know, you just have no idea. You're looking at these things and they're looking back at you and you're looking but you're not seeing. And so you just, you feel so awkward and uncomfortable and
