On a cold, sunny morning in January, 1997, Leonard Prescott, a 39-year-old construction worker,

was driving into the town of Willow Springs, Illinois, when he noticed two strange-looking objects underneath a bridge railing.

He stopped to get a better look and told himself, well, those must be department store mannequins.

How many times do we hear people saying that?

Yeah, I'm just not sure how you could mistake a dead body for a mannequin.

I think it's a mental kind of self-protective thing.

It must be.

Because you don't want to think it's a body.

Right. I think so.

So he drove off at first, but his mind

kept returning to these flesh-colored figures. So he knew in his mind something wasn't right,

and he wasn't entirely convinced. So he went home, he talked to his wife, Marie, and they

returned to the bridge. They got out of the car and walked over. The two bodies had a blue hue against the

whiteness of the snow. One of the girls was on her side with her legs drawn up, like in the fetal

position. The other girl was on her bent, apparently tossed aside on top of her. Marie screamed and

began to sob uncontrollably. Shaken himself, Leonard helped his wife into the car and drove to
