On Wednesday, February 23rd, 1983,

Brian Dugan was cruising the residential streets of Neighborville, Illinois,

smoking marijuana, and thinking about burglarizing a house.

The 26-year-old Dugan should have been at the art and label company where he worked as an ink mixer.

But for the fourth time in his seven weeks on the job, he was skipping.

He was aggravated.

He had just been dumped by his girlfriend, and her father was kicking him out of their basement where he had been living.

Bryant's girlfriend was fed up.

Not only did he fail to follow through with his promises to quit smoking and using drugs,

but he was always broke. He owed her and her family

money, and his manual labor job, which he hated, did not pay enough to cover his lifestyle. He

resented being told what to do, and considering he had just come off parole after serving three years for burglary,

she thought Brian should have been grateful to have a job.

It was around 2.30 p.m. when Dugan turned on to Clover Court and his car stalled out.

He found himself in front of a spacious split-level home on a large lot.

He approached the house with the intention of asking for a screwdriver to fix his car.

However, when he reached the front steps and opened the storm door,

he saw a young girl inside the house.

He asked her if he could borrow a screwdriver.
