Hey everyone, Artie here just to introduce today's show. The episode you're about to hear

0:05.7

is our conversation from January on New York Mayor Eric Adams' recent push to expand the

0:11.5

practice of having people involuntarily committed, all the while expanding policing powers

0:16.5

and police discretion over who gets committed and why. This was originally a patron episode, but we wanted to make sure it was available to

0:24.2

everyone for a simple reason, which is this didn't simply pop up and then go away, even

0:30.1

though most of the coverage of it has.

0:32.7

In February, a U.S. District judge ruled that Adam's plan can go forward, and so it has. There are legal

0:39.1

challenges to this. Just last week, a group of New York advocacy organizations filed an amended

0:43.9

complaint against the new policies, so there is still a legal challenge ongoing. But more than that,

0:49.9

as we've just seen this week, for instance, Adams was forced to back off from cutting funding

0:54.5

to the New York Public Library system, for now at least, when faced with enough public outrage.

0:59.4

So if the things we describe in this episode piss you off, it's not too late to try to make

1:03.8

Adam's answer for how blatantly evil this is.

1:07.2

One last thing, and then on to the episode.

1:09.5

We've had a decent amount of unlocks in the main feed recently.

1:12.6

That usually isn't the norm, but we typically use these unlocks to cover for when B loses a couple of days to treatment, and there have been a lot of those days recently.

1:21.2

All of which is to say thank you for bearing with us, and if you've appreciated the unlocked episodes recently, consider becoming a patron at patreon.com

1:29.3

slash death panel pod. We are entirely listener supported, so becoming a patron doesn't just

1:34.3

get you access to episodes like the one I'm introducing. It also makes the show itself happen,

1:39.1

including the free ones. Anyway, that's all for me. Buck Eric Adams. Hope you enjoy. Welcome to the death panel.

2:15.1

Patrons, thank you for supporting the show.

2:16.9

We couldn't do any of this without you.
