Summary

Happy Summer friends!

We are continuing our series, Empty Nester Wisdom, with my friend Amy Fenton. Amy is a mom to three grown kids and she’s been serving in children’s ministry for over 30 years. She has a passion for equipping the local church and the young children that come into those doors.

Amy talks about raising three kids (two boys) as a single mom and how the local church supported them along the way. She had a desire for her boys to be influenced by strong Christian men - and she can look back now and see God’s faithfulness. I pray through this episode that many feel called to step into volunteering for kids and students at your local church. It matters!

I loved her encouragement about finding a church that your kids actually enjoy. It may take sacrifice on your part, but consider prioritizing their needs in a church community when they are so young. I loved this practical yet profound advice for us all!

In this episode, we chat about:

  • Asking for help as a single mom
  • How to find a local church
  • Importance of role models our kids’ lives
  • How to support your children’s ministries

Enjoy!

Courtney

Hey friends, welcome back to Part of the Mess. I'm your host, Courtney Defeo, and I hope you're having a great summer, and I've heard from many of you, you're listening on your walks at the beach or outside and you're doing all kinds of fun things and thanks for taking me with you. That's such an honor. I would love to hear from you on which episodes are resonating. Who did you love? What did you learn from them? And then what kind of topics or things interest you for the fall? I'm just now scheduling some things for the fall and would

0:38.1

love to hear what you need most because that's the reason I'm here, guys, is to help support

0:42.3

you and even myself and my journey as a mom that we want kids that know, love and follow Jesus,

0:47.3

and that can be really challenging sometimes. So we want to be practically helpful and always

0:52.2

encouraging to you. Today's guest is Amy Fenton. She's a mom

0:55.9

of three that lives in the Nashville area. Her kids are all in college right now, actually one just

1:00.1

graduated, and she will share about her journey as a mom. But I wanted to have her on because of her

1:04.4

history and children's ministry. She has been a part of children's ministry from the local church

1:09.4

angle to now at an organization,

1:11.5

a nonprofit that services churches all around the world. And so she's been doing that for over 30

1:16.0

years. And she has such a heart for obviously Jesus, but the local church and how it can

1:20.7

support and partner with us and raising our kids. As she'll share, like, it's not all up to the

1:25.9

church and it's not all up to us. It's actually

1:28.2

a partnership with the primary influence being us. But I want you to listen from one mom's

1:33.0

perspective. Actually, she has been a single mom, her entire time that she's been raising her kids,

1:38.3

and she has some really great insights and wisdom looking back over her emptiness, sees it,

1:43.3

and looking back over those parenting years, what God has taught her, her kids, how he's been faithful. And I think it will encourage you so much today. We will link to several things that she mentioned, including raising boys and girls. You guys probably know, Sissy Gough and David Thomas, they're with a counseling center in Nashville, and they are good friends,

2:01.4

and we are friends. And so we bring up their names quite a bit. So if you don't know, that's who

2:04.8

we're talking about, Sissy Gough and David Thomas with raising boys and girls. It's a resource

2:09.5

and a ministry place that we all love. So make sure you check them out. It'll be in the show notes.

2:14.4

Okay, enjoy my dear friend, Amy Fenton.
