Episode Description You keep ending up in the same relationship. The same patterns. The same pain. And no matter how much work you think you've done — it finds you again. Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant is a six-time New York Times #1 bestselling author, spiritual teacher, and one of the most powerful voices in personal healing of our generation. Host of Iyanla: Fix My Life on OWN and called by Oprah the most powerful spiritual healer on the planet — but today, she's just Auntie. Her new book Spiritual Hygiene is a practical guide to clearing the emotional residue that has quietly been running your life, and this conversation is one of the most honest, most grounded Dr. G has had about what it actually takes to heal from the inside out. In this episode, you'll discover:  • Why you keep attracting the same relationships — and what the pattern is actually telling you about what's unresolved inside you  • What emotional constipation really is, how it builds up over a lifetime, and why it eventually ruptures in ways you don't expect  • Why self-awareness — not forgiveness, not mantras, not more events — is the first real step to spiritual hygiene If you've read the books, done the work, and still feel stuck — this is the episode that will show you why, and where to go next. Trust.

Going into a relationship where there's a script running in the back of our head,

0:10.0

in the back of our mind, where there's a residue that is settled in our heart,

0:16.0

that it's not safe for me to trust.

0:19.0

I don't trust people. I don't trust myself. I don't trust. And usually

0:24.0

the trust is towards something good. You know, I don't trust that you love me. I don't trust

0:30.5

that you'll be here. I don't trust because usually by the time we're five, somehow or another,

0:42.3

consciously or unconsciously, our trust has been betrayed. So we have the residue that when I trust, I get hurt.

0:47.3

The people I love, I can't trust. The people I love betray me.

0:51.3

And that's running, not consciously, you don't think of that. But what it looks like

0:55.2

is you get a partner and you want to check their phone. You're in a relationship and somebody says

1:00.8

something that stirs up a feeling and immediately you believe they're being dishonest. Or you expect

1:06.9

people to be dishonest because in this life, we don't get what we ask for, we get what we expect.

1:13.6

Have you ever dated someone who felt oddly familiar, almost like your parent?

1:18.6

You know the one that was emotionally unavailable or hot and cold and loving but never fully there?

1:23.6

And no matter how much work you do, how healed you think you are, you keep ending up in the same

relationship just with a different face. We will attract experiences that mirror our unhealed wounds.

1:35.3

And it's not just about relationships. It's money, it's joy, it's trust, it's how safe we feel

in our body to rest or receive or even be fully seen. That is why I had this conversation.
