Summary

We take a look at emotional affairs and imaginal affairs. Both are more common than you might think and can lead us into an experience of our own depths.

Here's the Dream We Analyze:

"I was with my eldest child and my husband. We were in my old hometown. I suddenly felt an urge to visit an ex-boyfriend. I knew he was unwell even though I hadn’t spoken to him for many years—call it a sixth sense. I said to my husband and child, “We must go to his house as all is not well.” We got there and entered the house via the back door. My ex-boyfriend was sitting on his sofa, dressed in women’s clothes. He was dead."

Today we're exploring in a manner of speaking emotional affairs. So what

0:38.5

are we thinking about emotional affairs versus physical ones.

0:44.4

I assume that that's why we're being careful to call them emotional affairs.

0:50.6

The first distinction that I would make in my own thinking is the difference between an emotional affair and an imaginal affair.

1:00.0

Oh.

1:01.0

Because I think that an emotional affair is founded on actual interactions with a living person.

1:12.0

And in my practice practice I've often seen

1:14.6

imaginal affairs where one person is fixated

1:19.7

with a tremendous amount of focus and dedication on another person that is not founded in reality at all.

1:26.0

Oh, that is so. What an interesting differentiation.
