God's peace be with you.

There is something terribly wonderful about this word,

peace, which Jesus speaks to his disciples and to his beloved church. But perhaps because our ears are not tuned to it, the way that

peace comes to us sounds offensive.

There is something actually offensive that happens in the Lord's service

here in the liturgy when we're gathered here by the Lord Jesus and it is the giving of this peace. There are two things that sound offensive and they go under the category of confession and

absolution which we have at the beginning every time we gather for the Lord's supper. The first thing that's

offensive about this is this business of saying that we are poor miserable

sinners.

If nothing else, this type of talk

does not help our self-esteem.

But this confession of our own wretchedness is true.
