Hi, my name is Pete Scazzaro. I want to welcome you today to the Emotionally Healthy Leader

podcast. Today I'm going to share with you a message called Elijah, hearing God in the sound of

sheer silence, hearing God in the sound of sheer silence. This is a message I gave a number of years

ago at New Life Fellowship Church, a study of which changed my life, changed

the trajectory of my relationship with Jesus, and I pray it does the same for you.

First, let me make a few comments about it before I release you to hear the rest of this sermon.

Now, I'd read about silence and stillness and monasticism and all that whole tradition going back to Moses, John the Baptist, Elijah the Prophet, Jesus in the wilderness, all through history for years.

But I didn't do it. I just preached it and talked about it. But it wasn't until 2003, as many of you know, I had my immersion into it, that the

scripture came alive to me about being still before the Lord and all that. And so my passion

for this message is to get you started, to get you moving into your own journey or deeper

in your own journey of silence and stillness. In the emotionally other leader book, I talk about

Benjamin Bloom's levels of learning. He's a great educational theorist. And I did a little,

you know, read what's it called an adaptation of his theory that's used around the world in

education about how we learn things and levels of learning. And so there's five

levels of learning. He notes, one, you become aware of something new like silence. Oh, this is really

good and I should be part of my Christian life. Secondly, he talks about we ponder it. We read about it. We

hear about it in podcasts. Thirdly, we value it and say, this is super important. Every Christian

should have silence in their life.

But he says there's the biggest gap is between level three where I value something and level four, we're actually rearranged my whole life or reprioritized my whole church, my whole life

around that value. That equals level four learning. Few people get to that most of our learning.

And then level five is we own it.

It's so much a part of us.
