and I felt like it was a good time for us to get some perspective from outside. It's a circle of political commentators that you

have been hearing about from us for quite some time over the past several months. And so I'm happy

to be joined by my colleague from across the pond at The Spectator, Freddie Gray. Freddie,

thank you so much for taking the time to join me.

It's great to be with you.

As you politely, that was a polite way of saying, here comes a no-nothing Brit to give

you his take on the U.S. election.

Well, so there are actually a number of questions that I have for you about the British perspective on this, but one in particular is of interest.

Politico reported this week.

They follow on some reporting from some other outlets as well, that the undercurrent in Europe is actually of the opinion that the Trump, the

return of him to the White House, would be helpful to them in many capacities, particularly

as it relates to balancing against China and some of their other interests.

And Politico basically framed this as being something that the diplomats and political types

are saying behind the scenes because they don't want to say it out in public.

How true do you think that is?

I think there is some truth to it in the the sort of European centres of power, there is a

drift to the right and there's an acceptance in the sort of traditionally centre-left European

establishment that the world has changed and we need to adapt to the new reality. And that opens up a sort of,

not necessarily a friendliness, but a willingness to engage with Trump world. And for me, as a Brit, the very interesting outlier here is Britain, because Britain, of course, has left the European Union. We had Brexit in 2016.

And yet we, because of our recent election, we are now drifting leftward quite hard. And in a fairly
