This is the last teaching.

And I can't think of a better teaching to end with than the defeat of Goliath by David in this valley behind us.

If you would, though, join with me in 1st Samuel 17 and follow along. I want to

read the account of what happened here. There are numerous details that are given to us

that have much in the way of personal application.

Let's begin in verse 1, where we're told that now the Philistines gathered their forces

for war and assembled at Sokoh and Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Damim between Soko and Asikah,

Saul and the Israelites first two assembled and camped in the valley of Ilah right down here

and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines.

The Philistines, and here's a detail, listen, occupied, I like that word, when it's in the same sentence with Philistine.

The Philistines occupied one hill, which by the way is this hill.

Back there behind you, you'll see an ancient Philistine television set.

It's right there to the left.

Next to the ancient Philistine dumpster.

The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another with the valley between them.

You had the Israelites on that hill over there.

A champion named Goliath, which by the way is what Goliath means.

We talk about the name being the nature. that's what Goliath meant, champion.

That's going to come into play here in just a moment.

A champion named Goliath who was from Gath came out of the Philistine camp.
