In addition to being a rad name for a book of the Bible, the word judges gives us a clue to the time period in which our story takes place.

Well, when the Israelites came into the promised land with Joshua, they were told by the

inhabitants, and destroy their altars. Instead, many Canaanites were permitted to remain in the

promised land. In fact, the people of God intermarried with those remaining Canaanites, which led to

acceptance and even participation in idol worship. And so because of all these failures, God told Israel that he would no longer provide divine aid to the Israelites to drive out the inhabitants of the promised land.
