Summary

EWFI
Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley banter about Yusei Kikuchi’s (and other players’) sleep habits and the possibility of a three-way AL West tie with no tiebreaker game, then (28:28) answer listener emails about surprising team assignments in Baseball-Reference headshots, a player who replicates the talent of the player who started in the same lineup spot the previous game, making mound visits to the opposing pitcher, a GM who can predict UCL tears and call up a replacement for the pitcher who’s going to get hurt, whether prospect-promotion incentives could delay the call-ups of the top two prospects in baseball, and retirement-tour qualifications, plus Stat Blasts (1:16:53) about on-base streaks to start a career, all-sweep season series, the best leaguewide power-speed seasons, pitchers who make switch-hitters sacrifice the platoon advantage, and José Abreu and the biggest year-to-year offensive changes.

Hello and welcome to episode 2063 of Effectively Wild, a fan-graphed space bulb podcast brought

0:28.8

to you by our Patreon supporters. I'm Meg Raleigh, a fan-graphed, and I am joined as always by Ben Lemberger, the ringer Ben Howreo.

0:34.8

Right, how are you?

0:35.8

Packing a backpack.

0:37.8

Hmm, okay.

0:38.8

But otherwise...

0:39.8

Last time we talked about AJ Preller's sleep schedule, the lack of sleep, and now I'm wondering whether you say Kakuchi has stolen all of his sleep somehow.

0:51.8

Maybe it's like there can only be a certain number of hours between the two of them.

0:55.8

And it's just that Kakuchi is hoarding them all, and Preller can't sleep anymore.

1:01.8

Let's see. How do I want to engage with this hilarious story?

1:08.8

How did you first hear about Kakuchi's sleep habits?

1:12.8

I heard about it for the first time, actually, on the Mariners' broadcast, because one thing that happens when your baseball team is playing the Oakland athletics,

1:21.8

and they are doing what they should do against the Oakland athletics, which is win.

1:25.8

You kind of like, sometimes you don't have a lot to hang around, because they're winning, and they're supposed to do that.

1:35.8

And it starts to feel like a Fargon conclusion at some point.

1:38.8

And so I heard Aaron Goldsmith and Mike Blower is talking about this on the Mariners' broadcast, and as it was relayed to me by them,

1:47.8

they relayed it via Caitlin McGrath, who's the beat writer for the Blue Jays for the Athletic.

1:54.8

The Kakuchi sleeps 12 to 13 hours a night.

1:59.8

Yeah, that was the first mention I saw.

2:02.8

Yeah, that was the first mention I saw.

2:04.8

And I'm going to admit to having an instinctual kind of unfun response to that, which was to think,

2:12.8

he's married and has a kid.
