Okay, let's talk about The Edge.

No, not the lead guitarist, keyboardist, and backing vocalists of the rock band, U-2, but that

thing that pretty much all of our organizations are operating on, you know, the Edge. But where is that exactly?

The Edge is where data in the form of information, so think emails, think pictures, think videos,

think temperature measurements from IoT sensors is created.

But the edge is also where information

is consumed. So think listening to a piece of music, watching a video, or indeed an actuator

telling a door to open. That's the edge. That's Simon Wilson. Hi, I'm Simon Wilson. I'm the

CTO for Aruba in the UK and Ireland.

Along with Simon and today's guests, we're going to be exploring the IT concept that is as profuse as it is perplexing.

is Technology Untangled. So in simple terms, the edge is

anywhere where information is created or consumed, which understandably makes its location pretty tricky to pin down.

The edge used to be in the room with the computer.

Back in the 50s through the 70s, the mainframe era, as we call it, it was in the basement of the

building and you had to sit next to it because, well, one, there were only few people who knew

how to use it, but two, you could

transmit the data anywhere anyway. Now the edge is wherever you are.

You're at the edge when you and your device or a device on its own reaches a network service,

say the Wi-Fi you're connecting to or the VPN you're using outside of the office.

And crucially, and I guess quite confusingly, it moves.
