If you've been to any tech conferences or read any tech blogs in the past few years, you've

0:06.1

almost certainly heard the term containers, as well as a load of other confusing words

0:11.0

with a few too many syllables.

0:17.2

So historically, when containers were first started to be used, they were aimed at very stateless applications.

0:24.5

That's Chris Ibbotson.

0:26.2

I'm Chris Ivittson. I'm a chief technologist focused on the financial services industry,

0:30.4

in particular helping organisations understand how to leverage hybrid cloud technologies such as containers, Kubernetes, etc.

0:45.9

Today, we're going to be exploring containers from the ground up to explain the what,

0:49.3

the where, the how and the why of the small but mighty innovation.

0:54.9

We're going to be asking what are containers and how on earth do they work?

0:59.4

How can organisations get to grips with this quickly evolving innovation?

1:05.2

And why are incumbent banks and Pokemon Go a lot more similar than we ever anticipated?

1:07.5

All this and much more.

1:11.6

I'm Michael Bird and this is Technology Untangled.

1:29.2

1:39.1

Containers in essence are a way to package applications to abstract them away from the environment they actually run.

1:45.5

By decoupling the application in this manner, you can kind of deploy them easily and consistently,

1:51.3

no matter where you're looking to run them.

1:52.8

So whether that's in a data center on the public cloud or even on a developer's laptop as they're

1:56.9

developing.

1:57.8

It can get quite convoluted, but for me, it is that simple. It's just

2:01.7

your piece of software and whatever dependencies that software needs to actually run.
