I'm Jonathan Kay.

When people talk about plutocrats and the privileged 1%,

they're talking about men like Jeff Rubin, who was formerly the chief economist at

C. I.C., one of Canada's biggest banks.

But in 2009, he resigned from that life and began turning his mind to some of the big systemic

problems he saw in the world economy, like oil dependency, energy scarcity, and income inequality.

His new Penguin Random House book is called The Expendables,

how the middle class got screwed by globalization.

And for me the book is kind of a time machine back to the days when progressives

cared more about the real needs of the working class than they did about

defunding the police or regulating pronouns. In fact the expendables like its author is actually quite difficult to peg politically

because a lot of what Jeff Rubin argues echoes the complaints you hear from

both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.
