Summary

Talking points: music, artistry, creativity, AI, culture, spirituality, psychedelics Music has been around for thousands and thousands of years. There’s a reason for that: it’s a powerful, synchronizing force between peoples, places hearts, and minds. And when you add psychedelics, well, that’s a recipe for incredible journeys. I’m honored to have had this convo with one of my favorite artists, and we dig into just how important music is not just for enjoyment but as a guide, mentor, and facilitator. We also cover his upcoming doc, Music For Mushrooms. Listen in, team. (00:00:00) - What role does music play in our lives that we often overlook, and how East’s relationship to music has changed over the years (00:08:25) - What’s worrisome about AI and music? (00:16:47) - How artists can weather the storm (00:23:05) - On initiation, and the threshold we’re crossing into a vast, uncharted era (00:26:00 ) - What was it like making music with Ram Dass? (00:32:49) - How do you make music for a psychedelic journey, and how the union of music and psychedelics leads to something more (00:43:15) - How do you describe psychedelics to someone who’s never done them? (00:48:21) - How music can be a mentor and a guide to turn to (00:51:55) - What sparked East’s Music For Mushrooms documentary Since 2008, East Forest has used music to guide listeners through modern journeys of deep introspection. The electro-acoustic project has remained primarily a solo effort (of Krishna-Trevor Oswalt), straddling the worlds of ambient, neoclassical, electronic and indie-pop. Whether via his Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner album series, his collaborative spoken word album with Ram Dass, or one of his communal “Ceremony Concerts,” East Forest’s goal has always been “building bridges and creating an approach that’s grounded, embodied, and unarguable.” Connect with East -Website: https://eastforest.org/ -Documentary, Music For Mushrooms: https://eastforest.org/music-for-mushrooms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eastforest/ -Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/east-forest/304982626 -Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3AWGOhO *** Pick up my book, Men's Work: A Practical Guide To Face Your Darkness, End Self-Sabotage, And Find Freedom: https://mantalks.com/mens-work-book/ Check out some free resources: How To Quit Porn | Anger Meditation | How To Lead In Your Relationship Build brotherhood with a powerful group of like-minded men from around the world. All right, Mr. East Forest. How are you doing today, brother?

0:09.2

Very well. It's a beautiful day here in Boise, Idaho.

0:12.4

Nice. Yeah, it's a beautiful day here, too.

0:14.6

And upstate New York, not as nice as yesterday.

0:17.3

It's interesting. This week, I've had some pretty fascinating conversations and conversations and like switching hats on the podcast. Yesterday I interviewed a sex therapist and it was all the like the ins and outs of maintaining. Oh, you had to say ins and outs. Yeah. There were there were countless, countless jokes. At one point I was like,, man, my 15-year-old brain just won't

0:38.9

shut the hell up. Like, this is hilarious. But switching gears into creation and artistry and the

0:47.5

magic of music. And so I'm really honored to have you here on the show. And where I kind of wanted

0:53.1

to start was just a sort of broad

0:55.1

question and then we'll see where this takes us. But what role do you think that music can play

1:00.5

or does play in people's lives that so often gets overlooked or missed?

1:05.6

It plays a really big role in our lives. And some of it's kind of obvious because it's music's more present in

1:11.6

our lives and it's ever been in the history of humanity as far as we know. But in our pocket,

1:18.4

we have almost every song ever written. That's just crazy to even think about that. We take

1:23.8

this for granted. We have music playing in the background. We use music for celebrations

1:28.8

to change our moods. We want to feel more sad. We want to feel amped up for a workout. So it's almost,

1:36.3

I use the idea of saying it's like asking a fish what water is because it's so present in our

1:42.6

lives. And then there's the additional layers

1:44.7

of sound in general like just me speaking the way we communicate is through sound it's a form of

1:50.5

music it's just massive it's just massive and so in that way kind of my big schick not just with

1:58.5

psychedelic therapy but in, it's sort of,

2:01.1

I think it's like an untapped potential of what we can do. That doesn't even get into thinking

2:07.2

about creating music, like what that does to our brain and the benefits of that, which there's
