I could ask you to imagine a warm morning in late June perhaps, a light breeze, shafts of sunshine piercing through the

mighty green conifers around our garden. They are a plant that I have memories of my mother

growing and cutting and filling the kitchen table with. For me, one of the most fascinating things that the tulip tells us

is how important beauty has always been to man.

But they gain, for me, a real different aspect

when you start to understand that the plants themselves are in communication with each other, are changing their behaviours based on their relationship to the other plants around them.

We're just a few hours away from Earth Day,

a day that's been dedicated to the environmental movement since 1970.

It's a time to zero in and reflect on the ways in which we can protect and look after our

planet.

At the RHS we try to do this every day, thinking critically about the ways we cultivate

the Earth and interact with wildlife that inhabit our green spaces.
