Summary

Bridget sits down with Batya Ungar-Sargon — journalist, author, and deputy opinion editor at Newsweek — for a wide-ranging conversation about her new book, The Jews and The Left, about American Jewish history and the political realignment happening in real time. They dig into how Jews became so deeply identified with the Democratic Party, why October 7th forced a reckoning for secular Jews who had barely thought about their identity in decades, and what it means that the loudest antisemitism ...

Thank you so much for having me. You've got another book. It's an ominous cover. Just going to say, ominous cover. We got it. We were like, wow, that's a scary looking cover.

0:23.7

That's the tone of the book.

0:29.1

I don't know.

0:29.9

I feel like the tone is very upbeat, no?

0:31.9

Why did you decide to write this book?

0:38.2

Okay. There were two reasons.

1:30.6

carve out for Jewish Democrats, right? Like they would never say with pain in their eyes about any

1:35.1

other Democrat, like, but why are they a Democrat? It makes sense. Like they suck and that's why

1:38.9

they're Democrats, you know? Right. But with the Jews, like, it really bothers them. They really

1:42.9

want to understand it.

1:46.4

So A, I wrote the book to explain that.

1:52.5

And B, I think there's a lot of Jews who are very confused about why the left, which they saw as their political home for so long turned on them.

1:56.1

And then also, I just wanted to, a big part of American Jewish history has been like totally
