Summary

One of the biggest reasons for colonizing other worlds is to ensure we don't die with our own sun, but even those alien suns we might travel to will die one day. And yet, our image of stars living than erupting spectacular as a red giant or supernova, present a somewhat false impression, as those stellar remnants often last far longer than the stars which bore them. Could civilizations survive around these dead stars? Could they even outlast the End of the Universe, as the last stars fade away? Hello, SFIA audio listeners. In this month's Nebula exclusive, big alien theory,

0:05.2

we're asking the reason alien civilizations might be rare is because most aliens are huge.

Science tells us that the universe is almost 14 billion years old, yet we'll live many

0:29.6

trillions of years more before the last stars die out.

0:33.8

But that is a future that will never happen.

0:54.8

Yeah. But that is a future that will never happen. So today we return to the civilizations at the end of time series after a year-long hiatus.

0:56.1

Today we'll be exploring what civilizations might do as their own suns begin to burn out,

1:02.0

and what options they have on the table to extend their existence after that.

1:07.1

We'll also be discussing the supernova engine, one of the most extreme forms of stellar

1:11.7

engineering allowed under known physics.

1:14.7

I should also warn viewers that while the Civilizations at the end of time series is, weirdly,

1:20.2

our most watched series, its episodes are always composed of concepts we've developed in

1:25.4

more detail in other episodes. They're not really meant

1:29.0

to be standalone episodes, and I'll reference some relevant episodes which you might want to

1:33.8

consult, so that when I start talking about moving stars, for instance, you already know

1:38.7

and understand the physics involved in that. This month we're also celebrating Douglas

series. Unsurprisingly, the second book of that series, The Restaurant at the End of the

1:50.8

Universe, is our focus for today. Speaking of restaurants and food, we have a lot of concepts
