Summary

New York's Catskill Mountains have long been the place where legends abound. When gangster Dutch Schultz needed a safe place to bury a steel safe with gold, diamonds,and bonds valuing over $150 million, he and his driver Lulu Rosencrantz headed for the little town of Phoenicia, and finding a good spot next to Esopus Creek- that's where he left it. Soon after, he and Lulu were killed in a hit ordered by Lucky Luciano. But a police stenographer was with Dutch as he was dying, and his last words sounded pretty convincing. 0:36.7	Schultz, a New York City mobster who is by anyone's standards as bad as they come. He was a bootlegger, a cold-blooded murderer, and he lived and died by the bullet.
0:48.1	By the time he was shot down while having dinner at the palace chophouse and tavern in Newark, New Jersey by a rival mob outfit named
0:55.6	Murder Incorporated in 1935. He had amassed off fortune in lute, mostly profits from both bootleg
1:02.4	liquor sales and a restaurant protection
1:04.7	ring that forced restaurant owners to hand over thousands to avoid being beaten, killed,
1:09.7	or having their businesses burned down around them. Back in those days mobsters couldn't
1:14.3	trust any banks and Swiss banks hadn't become popular yet. So criminals kept their
1:19.5	cash well hidden, literally in steel safes.
1:24.0	Legend has it that when Schultz felt the walls closing in around him,
1:27.6	he and his most trusted sidekick, Bernard Lulu Rosenkrantz,
1:32.2	loaded a specially built, air and watertight safe containing 7 million in
1:37.0	cash and bonds, the equivalent of $130 million today, and headed toward the Catskills to bury it. The Catskills are a
1:45.3	chain of ancient mountains located about a hundred miles north northwest of
1:48.9	New York City. It wasn't all of Schultz's money because he would be using a bunch of money soon to pay off his lawyers
1:55.1	who would be getting him an acquittal which would put him back out on the streets again
1:59.0	but it was a big sum worth millions that the feds would never find should the worst happen.
