the 1st, a new law in the Netherlands extends so-called mercy killing to children of any

age. Supporters claim that the law would only apply to five or ten extremely rare cases a year,

quote, to children in the terminal phase who suffer without hope unbearably and for whom palliative

care is inadequate, and quote. The suffering of children does and should break our hearts and the promises of relief

even if that means death can seem like the compassionate choice.

However, both a degree and the definition of suffering has always proven too malleable and too manipulatable to stay within the bounds of any law or safeguards.

Terminal illness gets redefined to include hopeless diagnosis.

Physical suffering expands to include mental suffering,

and the right to die somehow becomes the duty to die.

So if history holds, these five to ten cases a year will become more and more little ones who

actually need our comfort and love not death. For the Colson Center I'm John
