President Biden couldn't have been clear this week.

There is, he said, nothing domestically more important than voting rights.

And yet, as with Bill back better, his massive nearly $2 trillion social spending bill,

there seems little prospect that a voting rights bill can pass before the end of the year.

Not so long as two Democrats, Person Cinema and Joe Manchin remain adamantly opposed to

amending the Senate's filibuster rules that allow a minority of members to block passage

of just about anything.

Nobody has been in the middle of a fight for voting rights, and much else on the Democratic

agenda, than Dick Durbin of Illinois.

As majority whip, he's the number two Democrat in the Senate, and he's chairman of the Senate

Judiciary Committee, where he's vigorously pushed voting rights legislation that would

push back on laws being passed by Republican-controlled legislatures that Democrats fear could

make it harder for some voters to cast their ballots.

Durbin has also been overseeing a critical investigation way as committee into the pressure

President Trump and his allies were putting on the Justice Department to overturn the

results of the 2020 election.
