And perhaps because they seem odd, for instance, sacrificial rituals, prohibitions on

touching the carcasses of certain animals, there exists an almost overwhelming urge to

decode the symbol system of biblical rituals to make them make sense, to find out what each ceremonial act signifies,

to find the meaning behind the actions of priests and participants. So blood signifies life,

animals substitutes for worshippers, hand on head transfers sin, slaughtering equals transferred punishment, etc.

But this way of making sense of rituals may miss the point by a lot.

Wow, thank you. It's a pleasure and honor to be here. Drew is Associate Professor of Biblical

and Theological Studies at the King's College in New York. He's the author of several books,

including biblical knowing, a scriptural epistemology of error, and for our conversation today,

knowledge by ritual, a biblical prologomenon to sacramental theology.

Drew, before we get into your book, could you talk briefly about your background and how you made your way to becoming a guy who writes on biblical epistemology. I know your journey

was hardly straightforward. Yeah, it was not straightforward, and it was unanticipated even to me.
