It's early 1933 in Allentown, a small city in Pennsylvania.

On a snowy, windy day, a skinny boy in a threadbare coat trudges along the sidewalk, heavy book bags slung over his shoulder.

Just ahead, the boy can see his family's hot dog restaurant, its windows glowing warmly through the winter weather.

When the boy reaches the front door, he stomps the ice off his boots and steps inside.

The boy, eight-year-old Leia Coka, sighs when he notices the restaurant is empty though. He calls out to his father.

Leia hangs up his bag and strips off his jacket. As he makes his way to the back of the restaurant to look for his father, Leia begins to feel anxious.

Many of the shops and businesses here in Allentown have been forced to close their doors on account of the great depression.

If business doesn't pick up, Leia's family might be forced to do the same. Leia steps inside the small back room area, and it's empty just like the front.

Leia cuts his eyes over to the back door. He notices it's slightly a jar.

His father must have gone out to get supplies and accidentally left it open.

Leia closes the door and heads over to his father's desk. It's the usual chaotic mess, but in the middle on top of the account books, there's a pile of checks spilling out of an envelope.

Leia grabs the checks and sits through them. They've been returned by the bank. They're all stamped with the same two words in sufficient funds.

Leia's just eight-years-old, but even he knows what that means. Trouble for the family business.

But he knows he shouldn't be snooping around his father's desk and is startled when he hears a voice coming from outside.

Leia turns around to see his father, Nikola, entering through the back door of the restaurant, a sack of food in hand.

Leia quickly sets the checks down before his father notices.

What are you doing, Lido? Nothing. I thought you were maybe back here as well.

I was getting some potatoes from out back. How was school? I was alright. Want something to eat? Sure.

A few minutes later, Leia sits on a stool at the counter, watching his father worth the grill.

Soon enough, a freshly cooked hot dog is on a plate in front of Leia, but it's obvious to his father that the boy seems a little down.

Hey, what's wrong, Lido? I don't want to move. Move. What are you talking about? I saw the checks from the bank.
