When I first started doing this and I would talk about climate change, it was like another

subject like geology, hydrology, meteorology and it was well received and then at some

point it got politicized.

Extraordinary as a company was putting ads in the newspaper that were contrary to the

research that they were paying us to be doing.

Well some of the predictions like sea level rise go all the way back to the 1950s, other

predictions developed later maybe in the 70s and 80s and what we're seeing now is that

all these predictions are coming true.

So this is an experiment in shifting public opinion away from urgency because they know

by 1991, we're on the verge of a call to arms.

There is legislation being proposed, there's hearings in Congress, there's going to be

an international meeting about this and international body has been formed, study it, the world

is waking up.

A lot of people today think of Russian bot armies and information wars and the well oiled

political propaganda machine operating in the US as a modern invention brought about by

data mining and social media.

In fact, those are just new tools in an established trade.

And that trade was perfected in the 1980s and 1990s on one long running well orchestrated

campaign that spanned industries.

It manipulated not only the media but also various institutions and the general public.

It turned America's individualism on itself and twisted it.

It planted the right people at the right parties to make sure progress could be stopped.
