The The This is Dreyfus, a very modern affair.

So far on the show, we've seen Alfred Dreyfus, an innocent man framed,

ashamed and abused, but his wife, his brother, and a

surprising coalition of supporters remained committed to clearing his name. Part 3, Free Alfred Dreyfus.

After his humiliation, Drifus was taken back to his cell at the prison on the Rue de Shushmiti. A few weeks later, a wagon pulled up to the prison's main gate in the middle of the night, and Dreyfus was

woken up and shipped to the Gar d'Ose. There he was put on a train, chained and crouched in a cage-like

contraption that hadn't allowed him to move or stretch his legs.

A few hours later he arrived at La Rochelle.

Someone, spotting the prisoner and his escorts, shouted his name.

A mob began to gather.

By nightfall, when Dreyfus was finally allowed out, the mob had thickened.

As soon as I appeared, Dreyfus later wrote in his memoir, The clamammer redoubled.

The throng made sudden and angry rushes at me,

and blows fell on and around me.

I stood in passive in the midst of this mob

for a moment, almost undefended, ready to deliver up my body to it, but my soul was my own.

And I understood only too well the outraged feelings of this poor misguided people. On February 21st he boarded the ship that would take him to

Devil's Island.

So at this point France has outlawed execution for political crimes, so they sentence him to prison for life.
