author. Throughout his career, he started treatment centers, created breakthrough new models

rooted in research, and has been a leading voice on issues of mental health and leadership

This is a fascinating topic for so many of us. We so recognize the need for trust.

We've got to trust many people in our lives, but for many of us, trust is a hard thing because trust has been violated in the past

and struggling to rebuild it can be

exhausting. And then I want to talk with you about how we can learn to be trustworthy people

in a world that has broken trust with us. So first let me start by asking you how you got

into psychology in the first place. You know, a lot of times people say, well, psychology,

people get into psychology because they're crazy.

And I'm going to say, I actually came to psychology

through my own pain.

And it's just saying exactly the same time

I came to a deeper, deeper commitment of faith.

I was in college and had gone there to play a sport and got injured and lost my ability to play.

And I hit bottom, I was really, really depressed.

And I kind of, you know, I'd sort of been, you can't sort of be a

Christian. I'd been a Christian since I was a kid, but sort of one foot in and one foot out,

you know, always sports was a little more my God. And then I found myself hitting bottom. And so

one day I reached out in an empty church there on the SMU campus in Dallas and asked, is there anybody there?
