Summary

Why is there stigma associated with how we cope with the loss of a pet? It seems like we can't get it right: we're judged for grieving the death of the animal too much ('it's just a pet!') or too little ('he/she is getting a new dog already?').

What can we do to heal and move forward from it? Why does it feel like we never fully get over it?

You can watch his compelling TED talk, "Why we all need to practice emotional first aid", which has gathered more than six and a half million views, at https://www.ted.com/talks/guy_winch_the_case_for_emotional_hygiene. His website is http://www.guywinch.com.

Welcome to Nobody Told Me. I'm Laura Owens. And I'm Jan Black. We are excited to welcome Dr. Guy

0:18.2

Wynch back to the show to talk with us about healing from the loss of a pet.

0:23.2

Guy was here previously talking about his book, How to Fix a Broken Heart, which aims to

0:27.9

help people cope after a breakup or death of someone they love. That someone can be a pet, and we wanted

0:34.4

to talk more in depth about how devastating the loss of a pet can be and what we

0:39.1

can do to move forward from it. Guy is a licensed psychologist and in-demand keynote speaker

0:44.7

who's a leading advocate for integrating the science of emotional health into every aspect of our

0:50.3

daily lives. Guy, welcome back to the show. Thank you so much for having me back.

0:55.6

Talk to us more about why you became so interested in what happens to people

0:59.6

grieving the loss of a pet.

1:01.6

I became interested because in my private practice, I would see people who lost pets

1:06.1

and who were absolutely devastated.

1:09.2

And I would look at the research and see that, according to the research,

1:13.1

the grief that people feel is really similar in many cases to the grief they feel from the

1:19.6

loss of a first degree relative. It can take months up to a year to recover from the loss of a pet.

1:26.0

The pet can be interwoven into their daily lives

1:29.9

in a much more embedded and fundamental way than almost anyone else. And yet, it's something

1:36.0

that we don't take seriously as a society in almost every situation when somebody would

1:41.9

come in clearly devastated. They would always say, I know this

1:46.6

is silly, but I feel like such an idiot that I'm so upset, but, and there is nothing silly about that

1:53.6

level of grief, and there is nothing silly about that kind of loss. And so it was important for me

1:58.6

to write about, you know, why this is something we
