Even harder when they're PTSD-level, or secretly impact your relationships/intimacy/work life. Which is exactly why I'm grateful folks like Dr. Frank, who live at the intersection of cutting-edge research, lived experience, and calm strength. We dive right into WHY these things happen and how they're stored in the body and mind, offering practical advice throughout. Strongly recommend you listen to this one! (00:00:00) - What can neurobiology teach us about PTSD? (00:06:20) - What are the symptoms of PTSD, and why disassociation, derealization, and depersonalization happen (00:16:31) - Where do you even begin getting a handle on PTSD? All right, Dr. Anderson.

0:09.3

Thank you so much for joining us.

0:10.9

I'm just going to start with Dr. Anderson.

0:12.9

I'll call you Frank after, but I got to start with it.

0:16.1

It was funny as I was gearing up for the conversation today.

0:20.2

I kept hearing the special agent from the

0:22.8

Matrix like Dr. Anderson. I don't know if you've ever gotten that before.

0:27.2

Oh, yes, I have. Anyway, let's dive straight in to the deep end with the question, what can

0:36.3

neurobiology teach us about PTSD?

0:39.3

Yeah, it's a good question.

0:41.5

And I'm happy that more and more of the general public is kind of paying attention to the nervous

0:45.7

system and paying attention to neurobiology because, you know, I've been working in this field

0:51.1

since 1992, really long time, and been teaching about the neurobiology

0:56.3

of PTSD and dissociation for a long time, especially as it relates to psychopharmacology or

1:02.3

medications. But the world is better versed at, oh, wow, the nervous system has a role here,

1:08.6

and our biology plays an important piece. So I'm happy

1:12.6

about it. A lot of the work, as a doctor, I kind of nerded out around science anyways. So I always

1:18.4

had that interest. I remember doing my neurology rotation, a class in neurology. I'm like,

1:25.1

God, this is fascinating. We'll never figure this shit out.

1:28.0

Like, you know, never will, you know, cardiology, they know so much, you know, because they've done so much research and they have a good sense of how the heart works. I'm like, the brain, that will never figure this out. Right. So I'm like, I'll never get bored in this subject. I really felt that way, but the neurobiology is important. And like, we've known

1:46.7

about the neurobiology of PTSD in a hyper-aroused way, sympathetic activation, the fight or flight,

1:54.6

holy shit kind of stuff. And there's a whole set of understanding around it.
