At what age do girls begin to become aware of their physical appearance and perhaps self-conscious about it?

You know, it starts much earlier than most people realize.

The first research study I ever did was looking at five-year-old girls,

and we found that about 20% of them were expressing some dissatisfaction with their bodies.

It really starts to take off, though, this concern during puberty,

so during the tween and teen years.

And obviously, we are dealing with a whole new world here with quarantining and girls going to

school online rather than in person. It was so surprising to read from a recent study from the

University of Missouri, where it said that girls have been so stressed out

about weight gain that 40% of those surveyed would rather get COVID-19 than gain 25 pounds.

Is that very surprising to you? Or from your research, is that kind of what you would expect?

Yeah, sadly, I think it's not totally surprising. That research looked at young adults, so kind of college

aged a little bit older. And part of what's going on, of course, is just that that age groups

doesn't feel the same level of risk, and they aren't actually at the same level of risk in
