Broadly speaking,

pigmentation occurs due to an increase

in the number of pigment-producing cells in the skin

or the pigmented substance they produce.

And it can be brought on by a number of factors, the sun and hormones

chief among them. But what they look like to you and I are dark patches on the skin that can vary in size.
