When my grandma got married at the age of 19, abortion was still illegal.

No-fault divorce wasn't a thing, she couldn't access contraceptives, she couldn't even open up a bank account by herself.

Did she love my grandfather?

Well, yeah.

But what other choice did she really have?

Love is and always has been, a political question.

Has secularism set love free, or is it meaningless without the church?

Has feminism robbed men of their role as husband and provider? And what about

the endemic loneliness and atomisation plaguing people across much of the Western world? Who we

deem as inherently unlovable, whether or not we think of ourselves as deserving. And what it is that people really

need in terms of money and housing to be able to properly love each other has massive implications

for the politics that we live with. Sean Faye's new book, Love in Exile, is about love in all its forms and why so many of us feel

like failures in what's meant to be the most universal human experience of all. It's about how the very

idea of love, what it means to love well, has shifted its shape throughout the ages and this was a really enjoyable conversation
