Everyone claims to be opposed to elites. It's a prerequisite in contemporary politics,

in almost every single country, including in this country where even those in government

with a great deal of power claim they're opposed to elites.

Now, it's important to say here in the Varymedia we generally have a view of the elite.

The billionaires, the CEOs, the corporate class, the 1% and their interests are overwhelmingly

reflected in the media and in politics and also in how we access things like housing,

food and what work looks like. But not everybody agrees with that definition of the elite.

One person who definitely does not is my guest today Matthew Goodwin. He's a professor of politics

at the University of Kent. In his new book he talks about the rise of a new elite distinctly

different to the elites of decades past, which is both culturally and economically liberal but

also completely as a step with the rest of the country. Now, it's important to say that many

people who follow the Varymedia and some people who work here too run sure about us conducting

this into you. They disagreed with it fundamentally because of the politics of Matthew Goodwin,

some of his views. I disagreed with that however as did other colleagues as well here in Vary

because given the state the Conservative Party after 2024 and the fact that mainstream

conservatism will probably have to reconfigure itself quite extensively over the next several years,

we felt it was critically important to engage with these assertions of a new elite head on

and to have a dialogue with him in order to better understand precisely what he's saying

and have something to say in response. Now, I understand not everybody will agree with that.

But my view and the view of other colleagues as well is that this kind of debate

arms the left with better arguments going forward and helps them too. I hope you enjoyed this
