the great minds of Dave Eggers and Nick Hornby. Two writers, I have long admired both for

what they're able to do on the page and the screen, as well as their side hustles,

in philanthropy and nonprofit work. Dave Eggers, as you may know, is one of the co-founders

of 826 Valencia, an after-school tutoring program, and Nick Hornby has taken the same idea

and set up something quite similar in the UK. Dave and Nick are probably two of our

savviest observers, writers who are capturing the changing social norms and the ways we relate

What can a citizen do? That is the question of this moment. What agency does any one of

Eggers has been trying to wake us up to the way things are and the way things could be.

He's a journalist, an independent publisher, the voice behind 15 books for adults and

another 10 for children. But perhaps most importantly, he is one of the founders of 826 Valencia

and Scholar Match, which support thousands upon thousands of kids coming into their own

lives as citizens. Here is my conversation with cartoonist, novelist, teacher, tech skeptic,

and societal optimist, Dave Eggers.
