I'm Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, and welcome to the latest of our We the People constitutional podcasts.

The National Constitution Center is the only institution in America chartered by Congress to disseminate information

about the U.S. Constitution on a nonpartisan basis.

And today we discuss one of the most interesting constitutional issues of the week and that involves the value

and First Amendment status of anonymous speech.

There is no better example of the importance of debating anonymous speech than the question of donor

disclosures.

And that is an issue raised by a case filed by the Center for Competitive Politics, which is a nonprofit based in Virginia

that receives donations from supporters across the country, including some in the state of California.

In California, nonprofits that raise money have to the state's

of California. In California, nonprofits that raise money have to register with the state's

registry of charitable trusts. They have to submit a copy of an IRS form which lists

the names and contributions of significant donors that is

defined as people who give more than $5,000 in a single year. Since 2008 the

Centers filed redacted versions of this form,

removing the names and addresses of its donors.

But in 2014, the California attorney general,

Camilla Harris, ordered the center

to send in an unredacted version.

The center filed a lawsuit, and that led to a request just last week

for emergency relief from the Supreme Court.
