President Trump's second-term trade wars begin as the White House orders

20% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and another 10% on China, while all three countries vow retaliation. Welcome, I'm Kyle Peterson

with the Wall Street Journal. We're joined today by my colleagues, columnists Kim Strassel, and

Alicia Finley. After a 30-day reprieve, President Trump, the self-described tariff man, said Monday

that there was no room left for

delay in his plans to remake global trade. Here he is on Monday speaking to reporters at the White

House. Tariffs 25% on Canada and 25% on Mexico, and that'll start. So they're going to have

to have a tariff. So what they have to do is

build their car plants, frankly, and other things in the United States, in which case they have no

tariffs. I would just say this to people in Canada or Mexico, if they're going to build car

plants, the people that are doing them are much better off building here because we have the

market, we're the market where they sell

the most and so i think it's going to be very exciting very exciting for the automobile company

and after the u.s followed through on tuesday morning here is the response from canadian prime

minister justin trudeau today canadians are reasonable and we are polite but we will not back down from a fight.

Not when our country and the well-being of everyone in it is at stake.

At the moment, the US tariffs came into effect in the early hours of this morning, and so did the Canadian response.

Canada will be implementing 25% tariffs against $155 billion worth of American goods,

starting with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and tariffs on the remaining

$125 billion of American products in 21 days.
