Part 1, Chapter 4. Night Journey

Out into the water.

Out into the night.

On a rowboat that is old, paint peeling, splinters from the oars and my fingers, on bay that has become an ocean in the other america

the one that is sharing space with the one we know the oil refinery spiders through the night

a cosmos of pipes and scaffolding and tall flare stack shooting fire up into the sky.

Either there are no stars here where the flames drown them out.

Turning away from the factory, and look at the town scattered floating across the water.

Some of the buildings look familiar, structures from the town of the day, from our America,

drifting in loose formation, lights reflecting off the waves, because there are waves now, little white caps.

I see the smoke shop bobbing away, and ironically the boat rental place.
