Summary

Acts 4:36 - 5:11 - Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet. But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. 6 The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.
7 After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you[a] sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” 9 But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

0:27.3	We are picking up what we left off in the book of Acts. We're at the very end of chapter
0:31.6	four going into chapter five and I mentioned yesterday that this last couple of phrases
0:37.7	that describe a man named Joseph were given kind of as a setup to what's about to happen
0:42.2	in verse five in chapter five rather. So I'm going to go ahead and begin reading at chapter
0:46.9	four verse 36 and then we'll go into chapter five. It says Joseph, who was also called
0:52.3	by the Apostles Barnabas, which means son of encouragement, a Levite, a native of Cyprus,
0:58.5	sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the Apostles' feet.
1:03.2	So Joseph is really an example of what the passage just described. He's one of the people
1:08.9	who gave of his own resources to help meet the needs of others and the Apostles would
1:13.5	distribute it as they became aware of needs. So this guy Joseph, I love first of all, that
1:19.4	the Apostles gave him a nickname. They called him Barnabas, which means son of encouragement.
1:23.8	He must have been an encouraging guy. He must have been a guy who's thinking about others
1:27.5	and being mindful of how he can build them up in their faith. And he so much wanted to
1:33.2	be a blessing. He sold a field, a piece of property that belonged to him and he brought
1:38.2	the money from that purchase and he laid it at the Apostles' feet for them to bless others.
1:42.0	Okay. So now we move in to chapter five and it's going to give us kind of a counterpoint
1:47.2	to Joseph's story by telling us someone who did it. Shall we say the wrong way? Okay.
