Summary
This week we're starting a series on connecting with others. Based loosely on his book Everyone Communicates, Few Connect, John Maxwell shares four of what he calls his "disconnects." These are areas early on in his leadership journey that kept him from connecting with the people he led. This series will help you become a leader who draws people into your ideas and captures them with your vision.
We're also excited to introduce Chris Goede to you as the co-host throughout this series! Chris leads the Corporate Leadership Solutions team for the John Maxwell Enterprise. In this series, he and Mark discuss their own journeys from simply communicating to connecting.
Our BONUS resource for this series is the Don't Just Communicate, Connect Worksheet, which includes fill-in-the-blank notes from John's teaching. You can download the worksheet by visiting MaxwellPodcast.com/Connecting and clicking "Download the Bonus Resource."

| 0:30.7 | button, get the notes, let's go. Here is Dr. John Maxwell. I want to talk to you about |
| 0:40.2 | connecting with people which is the leader's greatest skill. Now let me just put this in the |
| 0:45.1 | priority perspective it needs to be at the very beginning of this lesson. Here is what I want to |
| 0:49.2 | say very simply. If I could walk into your life right now and I could do one thing for you |
| 0:56.6 | that would add value to you as being a successful person in life, I would teach you how to connect |
| 1:04.7 | with others because trust me the ability to communicate and connect with others is a huge asset |
| 1:11.7 | when you're casting vision, when you're giving direction, when you're wanting lead people from |
| 1:17.3 | one point to the other point. So I start with a quote from Gilbert Amelio, the CEO of the |
| 1:23.2 | National Society Conductor Corporation. Here's what Gilbert says, developing excellent communication |
| 1:28.8 | skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share |
| 1:33.4 | knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. Now here's the |
| 1:40.5 | great statement. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act |
| 1:46.6 | on it, then having a message doesn't matter. Great statement Gilbert. If you and I as a leader cannot |
| 1:55.6 | communicate clearly and effectively and connect with people, it doesn't matter what your message is. |
| 2:00.8 | It doesn't matter what your vision is. It doesn't matter what your statement of purpose is. It doesn't |
| 2:04.8 | matter what you're trying to deliver. If you and I cannot communicate and connect clearly with people, |
| 2:09.2 | the message is lost. Now I teach, you've heard me teach this, I write it in my books. Leadership is |
| 2:18.8 | influence. And when we talk about influencing people, the ability to communicate and connect with |
