How we do Christmas as leaders is critically important. Pete talks about the concept of a Blue Christmas, which offers permission for people to stop and pay attention to their losses, while at the same time remembering the power and goodness of God.

0:15.0 | And the very few pastors and leaders know the idea of a blue Christmas, yet it's incredibly important, pastorally, |

0:27.6 | And so, you know, how we do Christmas as leaders is critically important because of our influence. |

0:39.6 | let's grow our churches or ministries of your pastoring. We think of our families and presents |
0:46.0 | and children and joy and all that. But a blue Christmas is really a space created for people |

0:56.6 | to the reality of Jesus, a savior of the world. |
0:59.0 | And some churches actually do a service called the Blue Christmas, and it's usually held |
1:03.7 | around the winter solstice, which is December 21st this year, which actually is the longest |
1:08.7 | night of the year and the shortest day. |
1:12.0 | And theologically, it just integrates the fuller Christmas story, both the joy surrounding |
1:16.5 | Jesus' birth and also the pain of Herod's, for example, horrific slaughter of male children, |
1:22.6 | two years and younger. |
1:23.3 | So if we're going to mature and grow as Christ followers and really walk out a full biblical perspective, |
1:31.3 | it's really important that we integrate into our loving of people, this idea of a blue Christmas as well. |
1:39.3 | Because Christmas is among the most difficult times of loss of year for people who've survived |
1:45.8 | a loss. |
1:46.9 | It's a really painful time. |
1:48.9 | And very often they're just left out or forgotten at Christmas and maybe a loved one has died. |
