David Davis, the Brexit Secretary, apparently threatened to resign over the government's

backstop proposal. Now, that's basically the fallback option of staying aligned to EU rules to keep the

Irish border open if a deal with the EU can't be done. Brexiters like Davis have swallowed the idea

of sticking close to EU

rules, but only if it's for a time-limited period to avoid Britain being stuck in a half-in, half-out

purgatory. Now, his threat of resignation sort of worked. A date was inserted into the proposal,

but it only said that Britain expected the backstop to expire by 2022. Keeping up?

Well, it's probably best summarised as a classic piece of Brexit fudge.
